Applications are open for the 2026 MIT Climate & Energy Prize, a leading global competition that empowers students to design groundbreaking solutions for the shift toward a low-carbon world. With the deadline set for 14 December 2025, this call presents a major chance for aspiring innovators to transform their climate technologies into investment-ready startups supported by MIT’s extensive network.

About the Prize

Hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Climate & Energy Prize has grown into a major launchpad for university-led ventures addressing urgent decarbonization challenges. The program has helped numerous early-stage teams move from concept to commercialization, offering financial backing, intensive coaching, and unparalleled visibility.

Participants compete across five impact-driven categories, including:

  • Clean Energy – renewable generation, storage technologies, and grid upgrades

  • Emission Reduction – industrial decarbonization, methane initiatives, and carbon capture

  • Sustainable Food & Agriculture – regenerative systems, alternative proteins, soil solutions

  • Circular Economy – waste-to-value models, material redesign, and recycling technologies

  • Climate Resilience – adaptation solutions, early warning tools, and nature-based interventions

Previous track winners have introduced breakthrough ideas—from low-carbon construction materials to ocean-based carbon removal systems—and many have gone on to secure major investments and global partnerships.

Competition Timeline

The program is structured to guide teams from idea refinement to high-level pitching:

  • Initial Application – Submit your team overview and climate innovation concept by 14 December 2025

  • Regional Semi-Finals – Live pitch rounds held in the U.S., Asia, and Europe during spring 2026

  • Global Finals in Boston – Finalists present their ventures in June 2026 after receiving targeted coaching
