Villgro Africa, in collaboration with The Fred Hollows Foundation, has opened applications for the 2026 Eye Health Innovation Accelerator, a program dedicated to boosting the growth of eye-health innovations across Sub-Saharan Africa.

About the Initiative

Avoidable vision loss continues to rise globally, with the greatest burden falling on low- and middle-income countries. Despite the promise of digital health, AI, and technology-enabled care, many ventures in this space struggle to scale due to limited early-stage funding, complex health systems, and investor hesitation.

The Eye Health Innovation Accelerator was created to bridge these gaps by backing African enterprises that are developing impactful, affordable, and scalable solutions for eye care. The initiative offers a blend of technical support, catalytic investment, and market-entry opportunities to help companies strengthen their models and expand across LMIC markets.

Program Objectives

The accelerator focuses on ventures improving access to screening, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of eye conditions. Supported innovations may include:

• AI-powered diagnostic tools and eye-health technologies

• Portable screening devices for community-level use

• Digital eye-care platforms, teleophthalmology, and remote screening tools

• Health data systems, EHR solutions, and workflow platforms

• Affordable assistive and rehabilitation technologies

• Hybrid (brick-and-click) care models for primary or specialized eye care

Selection Considerations

Applications will be evaluated based on:

• Measurable health impact and improved service access

• Technical strength and relevance to real eye-care needs

• Proven traction and evidence of demand

• Ability to grow sustainably and scale across markets

• Team capacity and operational readiness

• Alignment with national and regional health priorities

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the program, participating ventures are expected to have:

• Stronger and more resilient business and investment plans

• Expanded market opportunities and partnerships

• Increased visibility among investors and health-sector leaders

• A clear pathway to scale across African and LMIC markets

This call is intended for ventures directly addressing eye-health challenges. The program does not accept biotech R&D concepts, very early-stage prototypes, donor-dependent projects without revenue models, or innovations unrelated to eye care.
