Selected scholars will be included in the African Volunteers Health Corps (AVoHC) roster and may be deployed to support national public health institutions across Africa. During deployments, participants will receive several benefits including travel coverage, accommodation allowances where applicable, health insurance during the deployment period, and stipends to support their work and operational needs. 

The program also provides opportunities for professionals to contribute directly to Africa’s health security and sovereignty agenda while working with government institutions and regional partners. Scholars gain continental-level exposure, expand professional networks, and develop valuable leadership experience through engagement with high-level public health initiatives across the continent. 

Applicants must be citizens of an African Union member state or members of the African diaspora with strong expertise in public health systems, health policy, or strategic planning. Candidates should possess a Master’s or Doctoral degree in fields such as public health, health systems management, health policy, strategic planning, or other related disciplines that support national health system strengthening. 

Applicants are expected to have at least seven years of relevant professional experience in areas such as strategic planning, institutional reform, or national policy development in the public health sector. Experience working with Ministries of Health, National Public Health Institutes, development partners, or civil society organizations is considered an advantage. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to design and implement national strategic frameworks, develop policy documents, and lead complex stakeholder engagement processes within health systems. 

In addition, applicants must demonstrate strong communication and policy writing skills, as well as proficiency in at least one of the African Union working languages such as English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, or Swahili. Knowledge of multiple AU languages and familiarity with continental strategies such as Agenda 2063 are considered additional advantages. 

The opportunity is open to citizens of any African Union member state as well as professionals from the African Diaspora. This means applicants from across Africa are eligible to apply for the program, provided they meet the required qualifications and experience. 

The program particularly encourages applications from less represented African Union countries, including: Algeria, Angola, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Comoros, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Namibia, Niger, Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles, Somalia, and Tunisia.
