Each successful scholar receives a grant of £18,000, paid in monthly installments over a period of twelve months, enabling them to focus on completing the first draft of a new book. Writers of non-fiction who require additional research time may be awarded extended funding for up to eighteen months at the Foundation’s discretion. Scholars also become eligible for mentorship from experienced authors or publishers after completing their manuscripts, providing valuable professional guidance and networking opportunities. Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must write in the English language and must have been born in Africa or have both parents born in Africa. They are required to have previously published prose writing that has been offered for sale, such as a novel or non-fiction book. Applicants must submit a single excerpt of between 2,000 and 5,000 words from their published work, together with proof that it has been published and offered for sale. In addition, candidates must provide a proposal of between 400 and 1,000 words describing the new book they intend to write during the scholarship period, a biography of between 200 and 300 words, and proof of African birth or parentage. Poetry, plays, film scripts, children’s books, and short story collections are not eligible. (⁠The Miles Morland Foundation)
