FULLY FUNDED: Apply for the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2027

Applications are open for the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2027, an initiative of the Royal Academy of Engineering that supports ambitious African innovators developing scalable engineering solutions to local and global challenges. The programme is Africa’s largest prize dedicated to engineering innovation and provides entrepreneurs with funding, mentoring, business training, and access to an extensive network of experts and investors. Shortlisted innovators will participate in an eight-month programme designed to accelerate the commercialisation and growth of their innovations while creating meaningful social and environmental impact across sub-Saharan Africa.

Shortlisted applicants will receive comprehensive business and technical support through an eight-month accelerator programme. Participants will benefit from one-on-one mentoring, expert engineering advice, training in commercialisation and intellectual property protection, networking opportunities with global innovators and investors, and lifelong access to the Africa Prize alumni network. The competition offers a total prize fund of £85,000, including £50,000 for the overall winner, £10,000 each for three runners-up, and a £5,000 One-to-Watch Award. The programme has supported more than 180 African businesses and helped alumni raise millions of dollars in grants and investment funding.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be citizens of a sub-Saharan African country and ordinarily reside in the region. The lead applicant must be at least 18 years old and be fluent in English. Individuals or teams are eligible to apply provided they are developing an engineering-based innovation that is already in the early stages of commercialisation. Hardware innovations must have a working prototype and evidence of customer interest, while software or app-based innovations must have a functional minimum viable product (MVP) and demonstrate market traction. Applicants are also required to present an ambitious but realistic business plan that shows strong commercial viability and scalability.
