PAID INTERNSHIP: Apply for the European Resilience – BULWARK Project Internship
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is inviting applications for the European Resilience – BULWARK Project Internship in Berlin, Germany, for winter 2026/2027. The three-month, full-time internship offers an opportunity to gain practical experience in programme coordination, policy research, civil society development, and European security.
GMF is an organisation dedicated to strengthening transatlantic cooperation on regional, national, and global challenges. Through research, policy dialogue, institutional partnerships, and exchange programmes, it works to strengthen relationships between Europe and the United States.
The internship will be based within GMF’s European Resilience Program in Berlin and will focus on supporting the implementation of the BULWARK project. The initiative works to strengthen civil society across Central and Eastern Europe, the Western Balkans, and the South Caucasus, helping communities and organisations build democratic and societal resilience against Russian hybrid threats. The project achieves this through grant-making and transnational learning opportunities.
The selected intern will provide administrative and operational support to the BULWARK team, assist with planning and implementing learning events and other project activities, and contribute to the preparation of project materials. Responsibilities will also include conducting desk research and preparing concise background notes on political and security developments, Russian hybrid threats, civil society resilience, and related issues affecting the programme’s target regions. Additional duties may be assigned as required.
Applicants should be enrolled at a university or another recognised higher-education institution for the entire duration of the internship. Candidates studying political science, international relations, security studies, European studies, or area studies focusing on Central and Eastern Europe or Eastern Europe are particularly encouraged to apply. Students from closely related academic disciplines are also welcome.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in democratic and societal resilience, European security, and the politics of Europe’s eastern regions. Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines are essential. Applicants should also possess strong research, analytical, writing, and communication skills, alongside an excellent command of English. Knowledge of German or a relevant regional language will be an advantage.
A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products is required, while experience working with databases and shared document systems is beneficial. Successful candidates should be comfortable communicating professionally with external partners, working independently and collaboratively within an international team, and attending the GMF office in Berlin regularly. The position may also require occasional support for events outside standard working hours.
The preferred starting date is December 2026, and the internship will run for three months. The position is full-time, requiring 40 hours per week, with regular in-person attendance at the Berlin office. The selected intern will receive compensation of €450 per month.
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and an up-to-date CV combined into a single document through the official GMF careers website. The application deadline is November 1, 2026. Due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. GMF is an equal opportunity employer.
