Apply for the Local Pathways Fellow (2025 Cohort)
The Local Pathways Fellowship (LPF) program, initiated by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network Youth Initiative (SDSN Youth), aims to empower young urban leaders from cities worldwide by providing them with the knowledge, resources, and platform to drive progress on Sustainable Development Goal 11.
The LPF supports and connects young urban innovators, activists, and thought leaders who are transforming cities and urban areas.
Candidates from any city or country are welcome to apply. However, SDSN Youth will ensure regional diversity among the fellows.
Applications for the 2024 cohort of the Local Pathways Fellowship will close on January 22, 2024. Thank you for your interest in the program.
Role and Responsibilities
The LPF is a 10-month program designed to guide fellows in creating pathways for ‘localizing’ SDG 11. The program includes monthly deliverables focused on:
- Understanding the major challenges facing urban areas globally and recognizing the potential of these areas to drive future change. Fellows will explore issues ranging from infrastructure and culture to economic opportunities, emphasizing the importance of leveraging urban development for global progress.
- Developing a project that addresses challenges specific to their city or area of interest, which will be the fellowship’s primary deliverable.
- Connecting with a global peer network of over 550 fellows from 180 cities across 80 countries. This offers an opportunity to exchange ideas, share resources, and collaborate on solutions with urban leaders worldwide.
- Gaining insights and mentorship from industry experts through the LPF webinar series.
COMMITMENT
For ten months, the Local Pathways Fellowship requires four to six hours per week.
CIRCUMSTANCES
Position Duration: There is a two-month probationary period and a minimum commitment of ten months for this role.
Supervision: This position is supervised by the team of Local Pathways Fellowship Program.
Compensation: This position is voluntary.
Training: All fellows are required to complete all SDSN Youth online induction courses, including team training.

You may also be selected to attend or speak at various events, with your experiences becoming a key part of the program's efforts and lasting legacy.
To be considered for selection as a Local Pathways Fellow, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A strong interest in sustainable development and a passion for the SDSN and SDSN Youth's mission, including the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on climate change.
- In-depth knowledge of urban planning, urban environments, urban sustainability, urban technology, development practice, community engagement, advocacy, or related fields.
- A minimum of one year of academic or professional experience in relevant areas such as urban planning, advocacy, or community initiatives.
- Professional or academic experience in urban planning, urban sustainability, urban tech, community engagement, advocacy, or similar fields will be considered a significant advantage.
- Ability to manage regular communication with the team across different time zones.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work well in teams, with excellent interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities to coordinate and develop projects.
- Proficiency in English (writing, speaking, and listening), as well as the local language of the city they represent.
- Availability of time and resources to fully commit to the fellowship, including having a stable and reliable internet connection.
- Applicants must be aged between 18 and 30 to be eligible for this role.
