Apply for the Software Sustainability Institute Fellowship Programme 2027
Applications are open for the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) Fellowship Programme 2027, which is seeking researchers, developers and other professionals interested in improving research software and digital research infrastructure. The fellowship brings together a diverse community of people working to make research software more sustainable, reliable and impactful.
The programme is open to applicants from different backgrounds and career stages, including those who are just beginning their careers as well as professionals leading established projects.
About the Fellowship
The SSI Fellowship Programme supports people who are passionate about research software and want to contribute to better practices within the research community. Selected Fellows become part of a network of more than 250 Fellows and receive opportunities to connect with peers, mentors and experts working across research software and digital infrastructure.
Around 20 Fellows are expected to be selected for the 2027 cohort, including up to three Fellows who are neither based in the UK nor affiliated with a UK organisation.
Selection Criteria
Applications will be assessed during the shortlisting stage based on two main areas:
- Ambassadorship – 30%
- Fellowship Plans – 70%
Applicants should therefore demonstrate both a strong commitment to supporting and promoting sustainable research software practices and a clear, practical plan for what they would like to achieve as an SSI Fellow.
The Institute may also consider strategic priorities, including areas aligned with UKRI priorities or the SSI's thematic areas, when making its final selection.
Selection Process
Approximately 20 Fellows will be selected for the 2027 cohort.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an Online Selection Day on 12 November 2026, running from 10:30 to 16:00 UK time. Applicants should reserve the date when submitting their application.
Those who are unable to attend on the scheduled date are encouraged to contact the Institute as soon as possible so that an alternative arrangement can be considered.
Don't miss out on the application deadline which is 5 October 2026 at 23:59 GMT+1.
