Apply for the the Managing Multi-Internationally Designated Areas (MIDAs) Effectively 2026 – International Heritage Management Training
Applications are now open for the Managing Multi-Internationally Designated Areas (MIDAs) Effectively international training course, a specialised capacity-building programme designed to strengthen the management of heritage places holding multiple global recognitions.
The course is jointly organised by the Global Research and Training Centre for Internationally Designated Areas, ICCROM, and International Union for Conservation of Nature through the World Heritage Leadership Programme.
About the Programme
This international training focuses on improving how Multi-Internationally Designated Areas (MIDAs) are managed—sites that hold two or more global recognitions such as:
- World Heritage properties
- Biosphere Reserves
- UNESCO Global Geoparks
- Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance
will explore how different international designations can work together rather than operate separately, helping heritage managers address governance challenges, conservation pressures, and future environmental changes.
The programme represents the third edition of the MIDAs training series launched in 2024.
Training Objectives
The course aims to help participants:
- Understand the objectives and requirements of multiple international heritage designations
- Strengthen integrated heritage management systems
- Apply place-based and people-centred conservation approaches
- Conduct management effectiveness assessments using the Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit 2.0
- Address conflicts and synergies between overlapping conservation frameworks
- Develop long-term strategies for sustainable heritage protection
Learning Approach
Participants will engage in:
- Practical workshops and peer learning sessions
- Case-study analysis using Jeju Island, a site recognised under multiple international frameworks
- Knowledge exchange among global heritage professionals
- Application of new resources including the World Heritage Management Manual (2026)
The training promotes coordinated management that integrates environmental, cultural, social, and economic dimensions of heritage conservation.
