Applications are open for the African Middle Eastern Leadership Project (AMEL) 2025.
The African Middle Eastern Leadership Project (AMEL) invites applications for its Summer 2025 Institute, a fully virtual leadership academy designed for young activists from the Middle East and Africa.
The program is scheduled to run from mid-July through early September 2025.
The program seeks individuals who believe in the equal dignity and rights of all people and who are either already involved in activism or aspiring to begin their journey in social change.
This eight-week initiative delivers interactive leadership training facilitated by experienced human rights defenders, peacebuilders, and experts affiliated with top institutions like Stanford and Harvard. Participants will explore key topics including:
- The history and practice of human rights advocacy
- Self-care and security for activists, including digital safety
- The study and prevention of genocide, with examples such as the Holocaust and the Yazidi genocide
- Conflict resolution and nonviolent organizing
- Principles of democratic engagement
- Strategic communication and use of digital media for advocacy
- Gender inclusion, intercultural dialogue, and cross-border solidarity
The course comprises six weeks of learning content, bookended by introductory and closing sessions. Weekly lessons will be delivered in video format, available for participants to view at their own pace. These sessions are accompanied by discussions, assignments, and quizzes designed to deepen engagement.
The primary language of instruction is English, though support is available in Arabic, French, and other languages as needed.
