ECOSOCC Call for Application for Elections into the 4th Permanent General Assembly – Apply now
The African Union’s Economic, Social, and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC), an advisory body established in 2004, invites applications for elections to its 4th Permanent General Assembly. ECOSOCC represents civil society organizations (CSOs) across AU Member States and the African diaspora, aiming for a diverse representation that includes social and professional groups.
The council consists of 154 CSOs: two from each Member State, along with regional, continental, and diaspora organizations. Under Article 4 of ECOSOCC’s statutes, membership elections emphasize gender balance and youth representation (50% of representatives aged 18-35). Members serve four-year terms, renewable once.

Regional & Continental CSOs
- Regional (8 vacancies): Organizations active in at least three AU Member States within a specific region (North, East, West, Central, or South).
- Continental (3 vacancies): Organizations active at the continental level across more than two regions.

Additional Information
*(As per Article 6 of the ECOSOCC Statutes)*
CSOs interested in ECOSOCC membership must meet these criteria:
1. Be a CSO at the national, regional, continental, or African Diaspora level, capable of conducting regional or international activities.
2. Have objectives and principles that align with those of the African Union as outlined in Articles 3 and 4 of the Constitutive Act.
3. **Registration and Status:**
- a) Registered in an AU Member State and/or
- b) Meet general eligibility requirements for Observer Status for NGOs.
- c) Provide at least three years of proof of registration as an African or African Diaspora CSO, including operational records.
4. Submit annual audit reports from an independent auditing firm.
5. Prove that at least 50% of the CSO’s ownership and management are Africans or individuals of African descent.
6. Ensure that at least 50% of the CSO's funding comes from member contributions. Any external contributions must be disclosed, and government support (if any) must be recorded in the CSO's financial records.
7. Disclose funding sources for the past three years.
8. Regional and continental CSOs must show activities in at least three AU Member States.
9. CSOs that discriminate on religious, gender, ethnic, racial, or political grounds are ineligible.
10. Commit to a Code of Ethics and Conduct for AU-affiliated or associated civil society organizations.
Eligible CSOs are invited to apply for vacant seats by submitting an application by *November 7, 2024, 17:00 Lusaka time.* Applications will undergo a review by ECOSOCC’s Credentials Committee and an AU Inter-Organ team. Successful candidates will participate in elections scheduled for November/December 2024.
