Applications are now being accepted for the third edition of the African Union Media Fellowship. This initiative is centered around three main pillars: fostering the production of meaningful, high-quality content; maintaining alignment with the African Union’s goals and institutional direction; and broadening the Fellowship’s visibility and reach across the continent. These priorities work together to ensure that the programme remains rooted in sustainable practices, is institutionally relevant, and has the capacity to grow. The Fellowship is designed to support authentic and powerful storytelling that advances Africa’s aspirations as captured in Agenda 2063.

Introduced in 2022, the African Union Media Fellowship was created to empower African media practitioners with the tools and knowledge to reshape how African stories are told. It aims to strengthen the role of development-focused journalism while embracing the potential of emerging technologies in media. The programme is tailored for storytellers, reporters, and digital creators who are passionate about driving Africa’s progress through fresh perspectives and innovative reporting methods.

A core feature of the Fellowship is its structured mentorship element. Every selected participant is partnered with a highly experienced media expert—someone with a strong background in journalism, media leadership, or digital content strategy, and with at least 15 years of professional experience. These mentors are not only chosen for their expertise but also for their understanding of regional contexts and their commitment to the values of Agenda 2063. They provide personalized support, acting as mentors, collaborators, and role models throughout the journey.

Fellows benefit from regular one-on-one mentorship sessions that address their specific goals and the demands of their individual projects. These sessions include feedback on narrative development, storytelling techniques, ethical journalism, and sourcing. In addition, fellows gain access to media industry resources and networks both within Africa and internationally. Mentors also provide hands-on support with pitching stories, developing multimedia content, and navigating multiple platforms to ensure the stories reach and resonate with their intended audiences.

The Fellowship combines theoretical learning with practical newsroom experience. Fellows actively collaborate with their mentors in shaping impactful media work that is both results-oriented and grounded in professional journalism practices. This blend of mentorship and real-time application ensures that participants not only develop their skills but also produce content with measurable social value.

To be considered, applicants must be citizens of an African Union member country. They should be active media practitioners—such as journalists, content creators, podcasters, or bloggers—with a minimum of six years’ experience. They must be at least 25 years old and able to work fluently in any of the African Union’s official languages, although English is the main working language of the programme. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a history of creativity, impact, and innovation in the media sector.

Those selected are expected to pitch stories that align with the Fellowship’s themes, participate in all training activities and study visits, and be available to attend AU-organized events when required. They are also expected to ensure their work is published in their regular media platforms—or in external outlets if they are independent contributors—and clearly indicate their participation in the AU Media Fellowship. Continuous communication with the AU’s Information and Communications Directorate is essential, and participants are encouraged to stay active on digital platforms, sharing regular updates and tagging AU and its partners during the course of the Fellowship.
