FULLY FUNDED: Apply for the Biodiversity Fellowships for Journalists to Cover the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP17)

Applications are open for the Biodiversity Fellowships for Journalists to Cover the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia. Organized by the Earth Journalism Network (EJN) in partnership with the Biodiversity Media Initiative and the SYMBIOTIC Project, this fellowship is designed to support journalists from low- and middle-income countries in reporting on one of the world’s most important biodiversity gatherings. The fellowship aims to strengthen environmental journalism by enabling reporters to cover critical negotiations, policy decisions, and global efforts to address biodiversity loss while making these developments accessible to audiences around the world. Selected fellows will attend COP17 in person and produce impactful stories that highlight biodiversity challenges and solutions.

Program Benefits
The fellowship is fully funded. Selected participants will receive non-refundable economy-class airfare, accommodation, meals, travel medical insurance, and ground transportation related to participation in the conference. Visa costs will be reimbursed where applicable. Fellows will also receive support with press accreditation, logistical arrangements, and access to mentorship and guidance from experienced environmental journalists.

In addition to financial support, participants will gain access to high-level discussions, expert briefings, networking opportunities, and interviews with policymakers, scientists, and biodiversity experts. This experience will help fellows strengthen their environmental reporting skills while producing stories that contribute to global awareness of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be professional journalists working for or representing established media organizations in low- or middle-income countries as classified by the World Bank. Candidates should have demonstrated experience covering biodiversity, environmental, or conservation issues and must present a strong reporting plan outlining the stories they intend to pursue during the conference. Applicants should be available to travel to Yerevan, Armenia, for the full duration of the fellowship and possess a good command of English.

Journalists are required to submit an up-to-date CV, relevant work samples published within the past 12 months, and a letter of support from an editor, producer, or supervisor confirming that stories produced during the fellowship will be published or broadcast. Freelance journalists are also eligible but must provide a letter of commitment from a media outlet willing to publish their work. Diversity in geography, media format, and perspectives will be considered during the selection process.
Eligible Countries
journalists from or representing media organizations in countries classified as low- and middle-income economies by the World Bank. This includes eligible applicants from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and other qualifying regions worldwide.
