The JJ/WBGSP is fully funded and covers tuition fees, monthly living stipends, travel costs to and from the host university, and health insurance. Scholars receive comprehensive support that allows them to focus fully on their academic and professional development. Beyond financial support, participants gain access to mentorship, professional networking opportunities, and an international peer community of future leaders committed to global development.

The scholarship provides a platform for scholars to deepen their understanding of development challenges and solutions, acquire advanced skills, and build professional networks that enhance their capacity to effect change in their home countries. Upon completion, alumni are expected to return home to apply their knowledge and drive sustainable development initiatives within their governments, private sectors, or civil society organizations.

The JJ/WBGSP is open to applicants who are nationals of eligible World Bank member developing countries. Candidates must have completed an undergraduate degree or its equivalent with excellent academic standing and must demonstrate relevant professional experience in a development-related field. Applicants are required to show a strong commitment to using their acquired skills to contribute to the development of their home countries upon completion of their studies.

Eligible applicants must not hold dual citizenship with a developed country, as the programme is designed to empower individuals from developing economies specifically. In addition to nationality and professional experience, candidates must meet the admission requirements of their chosen graduate programme, including language proficiency in the language of instruction. The scholarship encourages applications from individuals with leadership potential, a clear career plan, and a dedication to making a positive impact in their communities and nations.

The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) is open to nationals of eligible World Bank member developing countries who meet the specific scholarship criteria. This means that applicants must be citizens of a World Bank member developing nation, and they must not hold dual citizenship with a developed country. The programme targets individuals from countries categorized as developing economies and aims to support them in obtaining a master’s degree in a development‑related field at a university outside their home country. 

In addition to nationality, applicants from these eligible countries must have relevant professional experience and be committed to returning home to use their skills to contribute to their country’s development after completing their graduate studies.
