Fully Funded : Apply for the Migration Management Diploma Programme (MMDP) 2027 in the Netherlands

Applications are open for the Migration Management Diploma Programme (MMDP) 2027, a fully funded professional training opportunity offered by the United Nations University – Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT).

The three-month programme will take place in Maastricht, the Netherlands, from 5 April to 24 June 2027. It combines academic learning with practical exercises, interactive sessions and field visits designed to strengthen participants’ understanding of contemporary migration policy and management.

About the Migration Management Diploma Programme

The Migration Management Diploma Programme has been offered by UNU-MERIT since 2013 as a capacity-building initiative for government officials and policymakers involved in migration and asylum.

The full-time programme uses lectures, practical workshops, interactive discussions and problem-based learning to help participants develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that can be applied in their professional roles.

Participants will also have opportunities to engage with migration institutions and policymakers through field visits across Europe.

Programme Structure

The MMDP is organized around three core courses, with each course running for approximately four weeks:

Introduction to Migration Studies

This course introduces participants to major concepts, trends and issues in migration studies and provides a foundation for understanding contemporary migration dynamics.

Migration and Development

Participants examine the relationship between migration and development, including issues such as labour migration, diaspora engagement and the role of migration in economic and social development.

Migration Policy

This component explores migration governance and policymaking, including international migration law, policy coherence, global migration governance and migration scenario building.

Other topics covered throughout the programme include:

  • Migration data
  • International migration law
  • Labour migration
  • Diaspora engagement
  • Policy coherence
  • Global migration governance
  • Migration scenario building

Participants are expected to commit approximately 40 hours per week, covering contact hours, practical activities and individual preparation.

European Field Visits

A distinctive part of the programme is its field visits, which expose participants to migration management from national, regional and international perspectives.

The programme includes visits to institutions such as:

  • Dutch government ministries in The Hague
  • European Union institutions in Brussels
  • United Nations and other intergovernmental organizations in Geneva

These visits provide participants with opportunities to understand how migration policies are developed and implemented at different levels.

The programme is funded by the European Union through the Migration Partnership Facility (MPF) of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).

Successful applicants are expected to be notified of the selection outcome in mid-October 2026.

Don't miss out on the application deadline which is 1 October 2026 at 23:59 CEST
