FULLY FUNDED : Apply for the Summer Fellowship 2026 – Research Track (AI Governance & Policy)

Applications are now open for the Summer Fellowship 2026 (Research Track), a three-month, immersive programme designed to support individuals who want to build or deepen a career in AI governance, public policy, and research.

Hosted by GovAI, this fellowship offers participants the chance to pursue an independent research project while learning directly from leading experts shaping global AI policy and governance.

About the Fellowship

The Research Track is tailored for people interested in contributing to AI governance through research, analysis, and policy-oriented work. Fellows design and carry out a research project of their choice, supported by close mentorship from experienced GovAI researchers and affiliates.

During the programme, fellows:

  • Develop a solid foundation in AI governance and policy

  • Engage in expert Q&A sessions, seminars, and workshops

  • Collaborate with an international cohort of researchers and practitioners

  • Build lasting professional connections in government, academia, industry, and civil society

Research outputs may take the form of a policy report, white paper, academic article, op-ed, or blog, depending on the fellow’s goals and audience.

Applicants are especially encouraged if they show:

  • Clear, thoughtful writing and reasoning

  • Sound judgement in selecting and prioritising research questions

  • Openness to feedback and intellectual rigour

  • A genuine commitment to contributing to responsible AI governance

Duration, Location & Support

  • Duration: 3 months (8 June – 28 August 2026)

  • Location: In-person, London (UK)

This is a full-time, in-person fellowship.

Key Dates

  • Application deadline: 4 January 2026 (23:59 GMT)

  • Fellowship start: June 2026

Shortlisted candidates will progress through written assessments, a paid remote work test, and a final interview. Final decisions are expected in March 2026.

Eligibility Criteria
GovAI welcomes applications from a diverse range of backgrounds and career stages, including:

There are no strict degree requirements, but successful candidates typically demonstrate strong analytical skills, research experience, or relevant professional exposure. Backgrounds of interest include (but are not limited to):
public policy, political science, computer science, economics, international relations, risk management, cybersecurity, biosecurity, and China or technology studies.
