Applications are open for a prestigious fully funded United Nations youth scholarship that brings together young leaders from across the world to participate in high-level global policymaking processes in Geneva, Switzerland. This unique opportunity is organized by the Chemicals and Waste Youth Platform (CWYP) in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

The programme will run from 23 June to 17 July 2026 and combines participation in the United Nations Chemicals and Waste Management Study Programme with direct engagement in major international events including the Basel Convention Open-Ended Working Group 15 and the 62nd Session of the Human Rights Council.

Selected participants will gain rare, firsthand experience contributing to global negotiations, representing youth perspectives in international environmental governance, and engaging with policymakers, experts, and UN officials. The programme also offers structured learning, professional development sessions, and insight into career pathways within the UN system.

Participants will attend expert-led workshops, site visits to key UN institutions in Geneva, and interactive training sessions covering critical topics such as hazardous waste management, chemical safety, environmental health, and sustainable development.

Program Benefits
This is a fully funded scholarship designed to remove financial barriers and allow selected youth to fully participate in this global opportunity. Successful applicants will receive round-trip economy-class flights arranged by the organizers, as well as hotel accommodation throughout their stay in Geneva.

In addition, the programme covers all study programme fees and provides reimbursement for essential expenses such as meals, visa fees, and local transportation, subject to approval and submission of receipts. Beyond financial support, participants benefit from high-level exposure to UN processes, networking opportunities with global experts, and career development sessions including CV guidance, interview preparation, and insights into UN recruitment pathways.

Participants who successfully complete the programme will also receive an official certificate from UNITAR, further strengthening their academic and professional profile.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must be young individuals who are genuinely interested in environmental governance, chemicals and waste management, or related fields, and who demonstrate strong motivation to contribute to global change. Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 35 at the time of application and should come from developing countries, Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Small Island Developing States (SIDS), or Indigenous communities.

Applicants must also be fully available to travel to and stay in Geneva for the entire programme duration from 23 June to 17 July 2026, and must show commitment to actively participate in all activities, including international meetings and the study programme. Strong applications will clearly demonstrate how participation aligns with the applicant’s current work, long-term goals, and commitment to sharing knowledge within their communities after the programme.
Eligible Countries
This opportunity is open globally, but with a specific focus on applicants from priority groups. Eligible applicants must come from developing countries, including those classified as Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), as well as individuals representing Indigenous communities.

In practice, this means applicants from regions such as Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and parts of the Middle East and Pacific Islands are strongly encouraged to apply. Youth from countries like Uganda and other Global South nations are fully eligible.

Additionally, individuals who identify as Indigenous Peoples are eligible regardless of their country, provided they meet the rest of the programme requirements.
