Applications are now invited for the 2026/2027 University of Oxford Reuters Institute Journalism Fellowship Programme, a prestigious opportunity designed for practising, mid-career journalists who want to step back from daily newsroom routines and engage deeply with the future of journalism. Hosted at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, this globally respected fellowship offers journalists the time, space and resources to reflect, research and strengthen their professional impact.

The fellowship combines independent research with seminars, peer discussions and high-level networking events. Fellows spend their time in Oxford working on a project that directly benefits their careers, newsrooms and the wider media industry. The programme encourages critical thinking about journalism, media innovation and the evolving news landscape, while fostering collaboration among journalists from diverse backgrounds and regions.

To be eligible, applicants should have at least five years of professional journalism experience or be able to demonstrate equivalent expertise. Freelance journalists are welcome to apply. However, applications from professionals working in public relations, corporate communications or public affairs are not accepted. The programme is open to journalists from all regions of the world, including Africa, Europe, the Asia-Pacific, North America and Latin America. Applicants must intend to return to journalism after the fellowship and be able to actively participate in discussions conducted in English.

Most fellows on the programme are fully funded. Successful candidates have their tuition fees covered and receive a monthly stipend of £2,000 to support accommodation, food and general living expenses. The fellowship also covers return travel to the UK and visa-related costs. Fellows are expected to fully commit to the programme and refrain from professional work during the fellowship period.

Each year, around 30 journalists are selected, bringing with them a wealth of experience and diverse perspectives from newsrooms across the world. Fellows become part of a leading institution shaping global media debates through world-class research on the challenges facing journalism today.
