The fellowship is designed to strengthen international expertise in ocean observation by enabling researchers from developing countries and economies in transition to receive practical training at leading oceanographic institutions worldwide. Since its establishment in 2001, the programme has supported hundreds of scientists contributing to global ocean monitoring and sustainable marine management.
Programme Objectives
The fellowship focuses on advancing global ocean observation systems by:
- Strengthening scientific and technical skills in ocean monitoring
- Supporting data collection, analysis, and interpretation methods
- Enhancing international collaboration in marine research
- Promoting long-term ocean observation capacity in developing regions
- Expanding practical experience in marine technologies and oceanographic research
Fellowship Structure
Selected fellows will participate in short-term international training placements that include:
- Hands-on work in oceanographic observation techniques
- Exposure to advanced marine data management systems
- Practical training in coastal modelling and environmental monitoring
- Collaboration with experienced scientists and host supervisors
Training Duration:
- Between 1 and 3 months
Programme Period:
- Training must begin between September 2026 and March 2027
Key Dates
- Application Deadline: 1 May 2026 (23:59 UTC)
