Fully Funded to Bulgaria : Apply for the 2025/2026 GERDA HENKEL Fellowship Program

The Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS Sofia) has opened applications for the GERDA HENKEL Fellowship, which supports foundational historical research in the social sciences and humanities.Objective

CAS Sofia is an autonomous institution with an international and interdisciplinary focus, based in Sofia, Bulgaria. It fosters advanced research in the social sciences and humanities. Along with supporting collaborative research groups, CAS Sofia offers exceptional scholars the opportunity to conduct their individual research projects during residency periods of up to five months. Invited Fellows engage in the Centre's intellectual and academic community, including both Bulgarian and international fellows, while working on their selected projects.

Fellows receive comprehensive material and intellectual support and can benefit from the Centre’s global networks, seminars, and guest lecture programs.

CAS Sofia also provides assistance with practical matters related to travel, accommodation, and research in Sofia.

Program Benefits
Fellows are provided with:
- A monthly stipend of 850 Euros (subject to a 10% income tax) to help cover living costs during their time in Sofia.
- Accommodation in Sofia, including both living quarters and a workspace. Fellows also have free access to the CAS library and digital resources/databases.
- Travel expenses from their home country to Sofia and back, as well as visa and insurance costs, up to a maximum of 800 Euros.
- A one-time allowance for a research-related trip abroad during the fellowship, ranging from 750 to 1500 Euros.
- Research funding of 100 Euros per month.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be nationals of one of the following countries: Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China (specifically the Tibet and Xinjiang Autonomous Regions), Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Ukraine, or Uzbekistan.
- Hold a PhD in the humanities or social sciences.
- Possess international research experience (such as participation in projects and academic conferences) and have publications in peer-reviewed journals, which will be considered strong assets.
- Preference will be given to applicants under the age of 45.
