Applications are now open for the 2026 Akademie Schloss Solitude Residential Fellowship in Stuttgart, Germany. This prestigious program offers between 50 and 60 residencies every two years to creative professionals, researchers, and artists from across the globe. The Solitude Fellowship provides a space dedicated to focused work, cross-disciplinary exchange, and global collaboration. It aims to foster an open and diverse cultural environment both in Baden-Württemberg and throughout Germany. The residency encourages exploration and experimentation without requiring specific outcomes, while also offering the opportunity to participate in local events and partner projects with other cultural institutions in the region.

The program welcomes applications from individuals engaged in artistic, academic, or cultural practices who have established an independent professional path and are in a stage of active development. It targets those who have moved beyond the early stages of their careers but have not yet become fully established figures in their fields. Typically, applicants should have a minimum of two and a maximum of ten years of professional experience following the completion of their artistic or academic education, regardless of age.

The definition of “education” varies depending on the field of practice. For applicants working in the visual, aural, physical, textual, spatial, or digital disciplines, educational background may include formal studies at an art school or university, professional training, mentorships, master classes, or even self-taught learning. For those applying under the scientific category, a completed master’s degree or higher qualification is required. Candidates who are still enrolled in degree programs (except PhD candidates) or those already holding full professorships at universities are not eligible to apply.

Selected fellows will receive a residency of either six or nine months in Stuttgart. The fellowship includes a monthly stipend of €1,300 to support living costs, along with a furnished studio apartment equipped for both living and working. Travel expenses for arrival and departure are reimbursed once, and additional funding for specific projects may be available depending on the Akademie’s budget. Health insurance coverage is provided for participants from outside the European Union.

Fellows become part of a vibrant, international community, benefiting from the exchange of ideas and collaboration across various disciplines. They are encouraged to take part in Akademie Schloss Solitude’s public programs, engage with local networks, and utilize the institution’s professional workshops and facilities, including wood, metal, and video/VR studios as well as its well-equipped libraries. This environment offers participants the freedom, resources, and support needed to deepen their practice and expand their creative or research pursuits.
