The fellowship specifically targets postdoctoral researchers with outstanding academic records who are looking to advance their work in a dynamic research environment. While the program is primarily for non-German nationals, exceptions are made for German citizens who completed both their undergraduate and doctoral education in Germany, provided they have spent over a decade living and working abroad and plan to maintain their international academic engagement.

Recipients of the fellowship receive financial and institutional support to conduct research projects at various stages of their careers. Early-career postdoctoral researchers are awarded a monthly stipend of €2,700, while more established researchers receive €3,200 per month. These fellowships are flexible in duration—ranging from six to 24 months for postdocs and six to 18 months for experienced researchers. Additionally, participants can split their research time into as many as three separate stays in Germany within a three-year period. The program also allows host institutions to request financial assistance to support research-related costs. Through this fellowship, scholars gain not only funding but also access to a rich academic network and tailored professional support from the Humboldt Foundation.
