Applications are now being accepted for the 2026/2027 edition of the Ireland Fellows Programme Africa. This initiative offers outstanding early- to mid-career professionals from specific African nations the chance to pursue a fully funded master’s degree at a leading university or college in Ireland. The fellowship supports individuals with proven leadership potential and a drive to advance their countries’ development goals through high-quality postgraduate education. Successful candidates will begin their studies between August and September 2026, depending on the specific course, which typically lasts between 10 and 16 months.

The programme aims to cultivate future changemakers and strengthen local capacities to help achieve national priorities aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Additionally, it seeks to enhance long-term relationships between Ireland and participating countries. Citizens from countries such as Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and several others across sub-Saharan Africa are eligible to apply.

Applicants can choose from a wide range of relevant postgraduate courses, including but not limited to public health, agriculture, education, ICT, engineering, human rights, and business. A detailed list of eligible programmes is available in the official course directory. Candidates must have completed a relevant undergraduate degree from a recognized institution with strong academic standing, typically with a minimum GPA equivalent to a second class honours (upper division). Those with slightly lower academic results may still qualify if they can demonstrate significant professional experience relevant to their chosen course.

To qualify, candidates must not currently hold or be undertaking studies at the master’s level or higher. They should be ready to begin a new academic programme in Ireland in the 2026 academic cycle. Moreover, candidates must show a strong commitment to advancing development in their home countries and fostering positive ties with Ireland. Leadership potential and a dedication to public service or social impact work are essential. Applicants must also select three suitable courses from the directory that align with both their career background and academic qualifications.

Applicants should note that in several countries—including Uganda, Malawi, Kenya, Rwanda, and others—applications are restricted to staff members from organizations already affiliated with Irish Aid or its development partners. Those outside this network are not eligible and must consult their employer or the relevant Irish embassy to confirm their eligibility status.

This fellowship provides comprehensive financial support covering tuition fees, travel expenses, visa and immigration costs, health insurance, and a residence permit fee. In addition, recipients will receive a monthly allowance of €700, along with a start-up grant for settling in, a final allowance upon completion, and accommodation throughout most of the academic year. Housing is arranged and paid for during the first two academic terms, and during the final term, a monthly stipend of €800–€1000 is provided to support housing costs, depending on the student’s location in Ireland.

The Ireland Fellows Programme is designed to benefit the individual awardee only. Unfortunately, it does not extend financial assistance or visa support to family members or dependents.
