DAAD In-Country/In-Region Master’s Scholarships 2027 for Sub-Saharan Africa – Call For Applications

Applications are open for the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme 2027, offering postgraduate study opportunities to students from Sub-Saharan African countries at selected universities and institutions across the region.

The programme is designed to support the development of highly qualified professionals, future university lecturers, researchers and leaders who can contribute to sustainable development in their countries and across the region.

For the 2027 intake, DAAD is offering scholarships for a range of Master’s programmes at selected institutions, with scholarship starts scheduled between August and December 2027 under the currently announced calls.

About the DAAD In-Country/In-Region Programme

The programme, supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), enables talented graduates from developing countries to pursue postgraduate studies either in their home country or at a qualified institution elsewhere within their region.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, the programme focuses on strengthening higher education and developing professionals who can take on positions of responsibility in development-related fields.

The programme also seeks to increase opportunities for women and disadvantaged groups while strengthening the academic and institutional capacity of participating universities.

Areas of Study

The available fields vary according to the participating universities and individual calls. Applicants should consult the official DAAD Open Calls overview and programme-specific scholarship documents to identify eligible Master's programmes.

The programme generally supports development-related fields that contribute to professional capacity, research, higher education and sustainable development in participating countries.

Additional Opportunities for Scholarship Holders

DAAD scholarship holders can also benefit from additional professional and academic development opportunities.

These may include:

  • Summer schools in Germany
  • Additional training and professional development activities
  • Short-term research stays in Germany of up to six months where applicable
  • Access to the wider DAAD alumni network and its funding opportunities

Current summer school opportunities include programmes covering areas such as global health, climate extremes, environmental and remote sensing data analysis, and green innovation and entrepreneurship.

Application Process

There is no single application procedure or deadline for every In-Country/In-Region programme. Application processes vary according to the participating institution, programme and regional call.

Applicants should therefore:

  1. Review the current DAAD Open Calls for Sub-Saharan Africa.
  2. Identify an eligible Master's programme and participating institution.
  3. Read the specific call for applications carefully.
  4. Check the programme-specific eligibility requirements and application documents.
  5. Submit the application according to the instructions provided by the relevant institution or DAAD application channel.

The DAAD Scholarship Database contains further information and individual calls for applications.

The official DAAD programme documents should therefore be consulted before submitting an application.

Deadlines vary by programme and host institution. Applicants should check the specific 2027 call for their chosen Master's programme rather than relying on a single general deadline.
