Applications are open for the Nordic Scholarship Programme 2027, an initiative of the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) offering students and researchers working on Africa-focused studies the opportunity to spend one month at the Institute in Uppsala, Sweden.

The programme is intended for researchers affiliated with universities or research centres in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland. During the one-month stay, scholars can make use of NAI's specialised library collections, work from an office at the Institute and connect with researchers working on contemporary Africa.

The scholarship is fully funded, covering travel, accommodation and a daily subsistence allowance.

About the Nordic Scholarship Programme

The Nordic Africa Institute established the scholarship programme to strengthen the production of knowledge about Africa and encourage connections between Nordic research communities.

Each year, selected scholars are given the opportunity to spend one month at the Nordic Africa Institute. The stay is designed to support research by providing access to the Institute's extensive collections on contemporary Africa, including books, periodicals, newspapers and government publications.

Scholars can also connect their work with ongoing research at NAI through research hosts at the Institute.

Research Areas

Applicants should be pursuing Africa-oriented research within the social sciences or humanities.

The proposed research should clearly identify the topic and place it within its relevant academic discipline. Applicants are expected to explain the research methods, data-gathering techniques, timeframe and theoretical basis of their work.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit their applications online and provide the following documents:

1. Updated CV

The CV should include a list of publications, where applicable.

2. Research Project Outline

A 3–5 page research project outline should include:

• The objective of the research project
• A clearly identified and contextualised research topic
• The methodology and approach
• Data-gathering techniques
• The expected timeframe
• A brief explanation of the theoretical basis of the research

3. Work Plan

Applicants should provide a one-page work plan explaining what they intend to work on during their stay at the Nordic Africa Institute.

The plan should be specific to the one-month residency and demonstrate how the time at NAI will contribute to the wider research project.

4. Reference Letter

A signed letter of support from the applicant's supervisor or head of department is required. The letter should confirm the applicant's current institutional affiliation and field of research.

All application documents and appendices must be submitted in English.

Selection Process

Applications are primarily evaluated on the strength of the proposed research project.

The Nordic Africa Institute emphasises the importance of applicants presenting their research in their own words and framing. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Individuals who are currently or were previously employed by, or otherwise professionally affiliated with, the Nordic Africa Institute are not eligible.

Scholarship Duration

The scholarship provides a one-month research stay at the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala, Sweden.

Scholarships are awarded once each year.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome once the selection process has been finalised, and no later than the end of November 2026.
