FULLY FUNDED TO PARIS, FRANCE: Apply for the 2026 Marianne Initiative for Human Rights Defenders and young changemakers
Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 edition of the Marianne Initiative, a program designed to support individuals actively involved in defending human rights. This initiative is dedicated to empowering advocates who are on the frontlines of advancing fundamental freedoms and justice in their respective countries.
As part of the lead-up to the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty, which will be hosted in Paris during the summer of 2026, special consideration will be given to candidates whose work directly addresses this issue. Nevertheless, individuals working in other areas of human rights are equally encouraged to apply, as the program remains open to all recognized fields within this broader cause.
Eligible applicants are those who are engaged in promoting and safeguarding human rights in their communities and who are acknowledged internationally, particularly by the United Nations, as human rights defenders. This opportunity is open exclusively to adults who are not French citizens, regardless of where they live. Applicants should be able to present verifiable proof of their involvement—such as media coverage, letters of support, or external endorsements—that clearly demonstrates their commitment and achievements in this field.
Furthermore, candidates must be able to show how their participation in the French-based program would enhance their effectiveness both locally and on a global scale. This may include strengthening existing partnerships or initiating new collaborations with civil society organizations in France. Applicants should either already possess a passport with a minimum of six months’ validity or be willing to go through the necessary steps to obtain one. It is also essential that they are legally permitted to leave their home country and are available to stay in France from February through June 2026.
Successful candidates will benefit from a fully funded stay in a private residence located near Paris. During their four-month stay, they will receive a monthly stipend sufficient for daily living expenses, participate in a structured training series, receive tailored mentorship, and engage with a network of other advocates and institutions dedicated to the protection of human rights. It’s important to note that the initiative’s support concludes at the end of this four-month period.
