FULLY FUNDED TO THE UK: Apply for the Queens Commonwealth Writing Competition 2026 for young and aspirational writers
Young writers from across the Commonwealth are invited to take part in the 2026 edition of the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition, one of the world’s most respected international writing contests for young people. Organized by the Royal Commonwealth Society, the competition celebrates the diversity, creativity, and shared values that connect people throughout the Commonwealth. Spanning multiple continents and cultures, the Commonwealth brings together countries with different histories and perspectives, yet they remain linked through common ideals, cooperation, and a collective vision for a better future.
The theme for 2026, “Common Ground: Better Together,” encourages participants to explore the ways individuals and communities across the Commonwealth are connected. Young writers are invited to reflect on the shared values that unite people despite cultural or geographical differences and to consider how collaboration, empathy, and partnership can help address global challenges. Through storytelling, reflection, and imagination, participants have the opportunity to express their ideas about unity, cooperation, and the importance of working together to create positive change.
The competition is open to young people who are citizens or residents of Commonwealth countries and territories. Submissions must be written in English, and applicants must be 18 years old or younger by the submission deadline of 30 April 2026. Entrants are expected to ensure that their written piece does not contain any personal identification such as their name, age, or school. Personal details should only be included in the official online entry form and not within the document submitted for judging. All entries must also respect the maximum length of 1,000 words, as exceeding this limit will lead to automatic disqualification.
Participants who submit their work will receive recognition for their effort and creativity. Every entrant and participating school will be awarded a certificate acknowledging their participation. Outstanding entries are selected from different Commonwealth regions, and one overall winner is chosen from among these regional champions. The top winners are invited to the United Kingdom for an unforgettable week of cultural and educational activities organized by the Royal Commonwealth Society. During the visit, they engage in literary events, meet fellow young writers, and take part in special experiences celebrating storytelling and creativity.
The highlight of the programme is a prestigious award ceremony held at Buckingham Palace, hosted by Queen Camilla. In addition to the ceremony, winners and their families enjoy a week of cultural and literary activities in the United Kingdom. The Queen also celebrates the competition during some of her international visits, where she meets participants and presents certificates to local winners, further recognizing the achievements of young writers from across the Commonwealth.
