The Community Solutions Program (CSP) is a year-long leadership development initiative designed for experienced community leaders dedicated to improving their communities in areas such as democracy, human rights, the environment, peacebuilding, and gender equality.
The program includes a four-month practicum in the U.S., personalized leadership coaching, graduate-level leadership training, and a six-month community project upon return to their home country.
Key components of CSP include:
- Four-month U.S. Fellowship: Fellows are paired with host organizations in the U.S., where they engage in a hands-on practicum to enhance their technical skills.
- Community Leadership Institute: Fellows participate in a leadership curriculum that includes in-person training, online courses, professional coaching, and networking opportunities, aimed at developing their leadership and management skills.
- Community-based Projects: Fellows, with support from their U.S. hosts, design a community development project to implement back home. After completing the U.S. fellowship, they carry out a six-month follow-up project in their own communities.

Additional Information
The program provides coverage for most expenses, including:
- Assistance with obtaining a J-1 visa
- Round-trip airfare from participants’ home city to the U.S.
- A monthly stipend to cover housing, meals, and other living costs during the U.S. stay
- Accident and health insurance
- Accessibility accommodations, such as ADA-compliant rooms for in-person training, software like JAWS, and community assistance and training for accessibility needs
- Be between 26 and 39 years old as of November 13, 2024
- Be a citizen of one of the eligible countries listed below
- Reside and work in your home country (special consideration may be given to individuals with refugee status working for their home community)
- Have at least two years of experience in community development, whether as a full-time or part-time employee or volunteer
- Not currently enrolled in an academic, training, or research program in the U.S.
- Demonstrate a strong command of spoken and written English at the time of application
- Semifinalists will need to take and pass or provide recent TOEFL or IELTS English language test scores
- Be available to travel to the U.S. for four months from August to December 2025
- Not hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, and have not applied for U.S. permanent residency in the last three years
- Be eligible to obtain a U.S. J-1 visa
- Applicants who have participated in a U.S. Government-sponsored exchange program must have met their two-year home residency requirement
- Be committed to returning to your home country for at least two years after the program ends
- Not be a current IREX employee, consultant, or an immediate family member of either
