Selected fellows receive a grant of €5,000 (five thousand euros) to support the major costs associated with a two-month research visit at a partner laboratory in Europe (excluding Italy), North America, or a more advanced developing country. This funding is intended to help cover essential expenses such as round-trip travel, accommodation, and local living costs during the research period, enabling the fellow to focus intensively on advancing their scientific work without significant financial burden. By participating in the ATAP Fellowship, early-career scientists gain direct access to cutting-edge research environments, opportunities for hands-on experimental or theoretical work, and the chance to deepen existing collaborations or establish new research connections that can extend beyond the fellowship period. The experience also helps strengthen publication records and professional networks, which are key to long-term academic and research success. Fellows must use the awarded funds within the same calendar year and begin their visit no later than 1 November 2026.

To be eligible for the ATAP Fellowship, applicants must be outstanding doctoral students or early-career physicists who are within 10 years of completing their PhD (including currently enrolled PhD candidates). Applicants must be nationals of developing countries and currently studying or working in their home country or in another developing nation, with a clear research plan involving an established collaboration with a host laboratory. Fellows are expected to undertake a two-month consecutive research visit with a lab where they already have collaboration — often returning to the laboratory of their alma mater or another institute where they can conduct meaningful research and build professional ties. Proficiency in English, or fluency in the language of the host region, is also required to ensure effective communication and scientific engagement during the visit.

This opportunity is specifically for nationals of developing countries who are currently studying or working in a developing country. There is no restriction on which developing country you come from, meaning that researchers from regions in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and other developing parts of the world are eligible to apply as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.
