FUNDED : Apply for the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use Master Programme on Climate Change and Marine Sciences (2026/2027)
Applications are now being accepted for the 2026/2027 intake of the Master’s Research Programme in Climate Change and Marine Sciences, delivered by the Atlantic Technical University in partnership with the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL).
This interdisciplinary programme is designed to strengthen scientific expertise in climate change, marine ecosystems, and coastal management across West Africa. It combines academic instruction, hands-on fieldwork, and international collaboration to prepare graduates for impactful careers in research, policy, consultancy, and environmental management.
About the Programme
The Master’s Research Programme on Climate Change and Marine Sciences (MRP-CCMS) forms part of WASCAL’s regional mission to advance climate research, support evidence-based policymaking, and build high-level scientific capacity within its 12 member countries.
Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) alongside WASCAL member states, the programme provides advanced training rooted in both scientific excellence and regional relevance.
Programme Structure
The two-year programme integrates language training, coursework, research, and international exposure:
Language Preparation (4 Months)

Francophone and Lusophone students undertake English training at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana.

Anglophone students receive French training at the University of Lomé, Togo.
Academic Coursework (3 Semesters)
Participants complete joint master’s courses in:

Climate Change Science

Marine Sciences
-
Coastal and Ocean Resource Management
Courses are delivered by a network of regional and international experts.
Practical & Field Training

Shipboard research training (subject to availability and sponsorship)

Fieldwork and research activities supported by the Ocean Science Centre Mindelo

Applied research projects addressing regional climate and marine challenges
International Exposure
Where applicable, students may participate in a three-week academic visit to partner institutions in Germany.
Applicants must complete the online application form and submit all supporting documents electronically. A printed and signed copy of the application form should also be scanned and emailed as instructed in the application guidelines.

Additional Information
The scholarship package includes:
- Monthly living allowance
- Full tuition coverage
- Research funding support
- A laptop computer (on loan for the duration of studies)
Scholarships are renewable annually based on satisfactory academic performance.
Self-Funded Options
- Up to 12 additional students may be admitted on a self-funded basis.
Estimated costs:
- Year 1: €7,500 (travel, insurance, language training, shipboard training, etc.)
- Year 2: €3,960 (travel and insurance-related expenses)
- Tuition: €1,500 per year
- Living expenses are not included.
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Oceanography, Fisheries, Livestock Engineering, Geography, Atmospheric Sciences, or related disciplines
- Demonstrate at least intermediate English proficiency
- Citizens of other ECOWAS countries may apply as self-funded candidates, subject to availability.
