The Energy Modelling Platform – Global (EMP-G 2026) is now inviting applications for its upcoming in-person training hosted by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. This intensive global meeting brings together researchers, government analysts, and academic professionals seeking to strengthen their capacity in advanced energy modelling tools for policy planning and sustainable development.

Convened by leading experts from institutions including Loughborough University, Imperial College London and the World Bank, the platform serves as a high-level training and collaboration space for those working at the intersection of energy systems, climate policy, and national planning. The programme is supported by a broad coalition of international partners, including Sustainable Energy for All, the International Energy Agency, the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, among others.

About the Programme

EMP-G is designed to deepen practical expertise in energy modelling and integrated planning tools. Participants will build on foundational online coursework and apply modelling approaches to real-world policy contexts. The training emphasizes:

• National energy system planning

• Climate-energy modelling frameworks

• Policy-relevant research outputs

• Integration of modelling into government and university systems

The programme prioritizes applicants whose work directly supports public policy, national development strategies, or academic teaching in energy and climate planning.

Mandatory Prerequisites

Before applying, candidates must:

• Complete the required Open University course for their selected modelling track (November 2025 collection).

• Complete the Open University Political Economy course.

• Obtain certificates for both and upload them with their application.

• Provide a formal letter (from a government or university authority) confirming that the training outcomes will be applied in policy, planning, or academic instruction.

For the Advanced CLEWs track, completion of the “Introduction to CLEWs” course is required.

Certification & Participation

There is no participation fee, but space is limited and competition is strong. Selected participants will receive:

• An Open University certificate (upon course completion)

• An ICTP certificate confirming attendance and successful completion of EMP-G

Limited financial support is available, with priority given to applicants from developing countries who demonstrate clear policy application and institutional backing.
