FUNDING : Apply for the Operationalizing the Benefits of Nature-based Solutions to Guide Decision-Making in a Changing Climate

The Water Research Foundation is inviting applications for a new project titled *Operationalizing the Benefits of Nature-based Solutions to Guide Decision-Making in a Changing Climate.*Objectives

- To compile quantitative metrics and integrate or align them with existing qualitative metrics across various disciplines, connecting the benefits of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to design criteria and practical application.
- To evaluate diverse, innovative NbS applications against traditional methods, assessing performance, construction costs, operational costs, and multiple added benefits.
- To aid decision-makers in better valuing the benefits and trade-offs of NbS as part of a comprehensive water management approach.

Anticipated Outcomes

The project’s anticipated deliverables are as follows:

- A standalone synthesis document of the literature review, including annotated references for all publications and resources consulted.
- A summarized survey report with analysis on how utilities or municipalities have utilized the framework to quantify NbS benefits.
- A virtual, invitation-only workshop for utilities, featuring two sessions at different times for peer-to-peer learning, complete with all planning and support materials.
- A utility-oriented guidance document, with case studies on applications. This guide will include a field demonstration or pilot project to showcase research applicability and a dedicated chapter on knowledge gaps, research needs, and initial concepts for future projects.
- A webcast and presentations at conferences.
- At least one open-access, peer-reviewed journal article.

Program Benefits
WRF is offering a maximum of $250,000 in funding for this project, with applicants required to provide additional resources equal to at least 33% of the awarded amount. For instance, if an applicant requests $100,000 from WRF, they must contribute at least $33,000 through cost share, in-kind contributions from the applicant, or third-party in-kind support compliant with 2 CFR Part 200.306 cost-sharing guidelines. While applicants can choose to contribute more than 33%, WRF’s maximum funding will not exceed $250,000. The project’s expected duration is 24 months from the contract's start date.
Eligibility Criteria
Both U.S.-based and non-U.S.-based organisations, such as academic institutions, research groups, governmental organisations, consultants, and other for-profit businesses, are welcome to submit proposals.
The Timeliness Policy, which was created by the WRF Board of Directors, deals with researchers' compliance with the project timeline. Researchers are not eligible to be listed as participants in any proposals if they are behind on any ongoing WRF-sponsored studies without authorised no-cost extensions.
