GRANT: Apply for the DW Akademie Kenya’s TrustLab Incubator Programme 2025 for young changemakers and media defenders

Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 edition of the Kenya TrustLab Incubator Programme. This initiative, supported by the European Union and jointly implemented by DW Akademie, Code for Africa (CfA), and Siasa Place, aims to empower community-based organisations to effectively tackle digital challenges through innovative and locally driven approaches.

The TrustLab programme seeks to strengthen collaboration among independent media and civil society actors by encouraging the development of shared tools, services, and strategies. Through this cooperative model, participating organisations will enhance their resilience against digital risks—such as online harassment, surveillance, and disinformation—while ensuring their solutions remain practical and sustainable in environments with limited resources.

To qualify for participation, organisations must operate independently of political or security affiliations and be officially registered in Kenya. They should have dedicated and skilled staff available throughout the programme, maintain deep connections with their communities, and demonstrate a strong commitment to addressing digital safety issues like hate speech, monitoring, and misinformation.

Successful applicants will receive funding of up to €5,000 to implement their projects. The programme will begin with an in-person workshop in Nairobi from December 1 to 5, 2025, where participants will engage with experts on emerging digital threats and learn how to identify and counter them within their local contexts. A follow-up workshop, focused on idea generation and project design, will take place from January 26 to 30, 2026, accompanied by online mentorship.

The final phase, running from March to August 2026, will provide prototype grants and technical support to organisations with the most promising and actionable ideas. Only teams that have fully participated in the earlier phases will be eligible for this funding round. Through this process, the TrustLab programme aims to build a stronger network of innovators working to safeguard digital spaces across Kenya.
