Applications are now open for the IFRA-Nigeria Research Grant 2026. This competitive funding program supports young and emerging researchers in the humanities and social sciences who are conducting research related to Nigeria or neighboring West African countries.

The Institute of French Research in Africa (IFRA-Nigeria) invites applications from second-year Master’s students, PhD candidates, post-doctoral researchers, and independent scholars. Research projects must focus on one of IFRA’s main research axes and demonstrate academic rigor, originality, and relevance to current societal issues in West Africa.

Program Benefits

Successful candidates will receive a research grant of up to €1,000, depending on the project’s scope and budget. The funding is designed to support fieldwork, data collection, and other essential research expenses.

The grant is disbursed in two installments: the first half is paid at the start of the project (January 2026), and the remaining half is paid after submission of the final report by 15 November 2026.

In addition to financial support, grantees will have access to IFRA’s academic network, research mentorship, and opportunities to publish and present their findings through IFRA platforms.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants must be second-year Master’s students, PhD candidates, post-doctoral researchers, or independent scholars working in the humanities and social sciences. Applicants must propose research projects that focus on one or more of IFRA’s main research themes:
1. Beliefs, Bodies, and Health
2. Citizenship, Gender, and Mobilisation
3. Heritage Dynamics and Environment
4. Transversal Axis: Digital Humanities

Candidates must be available to conduct their research between January and October 2026. Applications can be submitted in either English or French. Collaborative research projects are also accepted, but the roles of all participants must be clearly specified.

Eligible Countries

Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Niger, Chad, and Togo.
