Applications are now open for the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) Fall 2026 Internship Program, offering undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to gain practical experience at one of the world's leading nonpartisan foreign policy think tanks.

The paid internship program provides hands-on experience in research, policy analysis, communications, event coordination, writing, and other areas while working alongside experts in international affairs.

Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects, participate in professional development sessions, and engage with leading policymakers, scholars, and practitioners. The program is available in New York, Washington, D.C., and selected fully remote positions, allowing participants to gain valuable experience in a flexible learning environment.

Internship Duration

The Fall 2026 internship will run from mid-September to mid-December 2026, lasting approximately 10–12 weeks.

Applicants may select up to five departments when submitting their application.

Eligibility Criteria
- Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program, or be a recent graduate within one academic semester of graduation.

- Have completed at least four semesters of college coursework before the internship begins.

- Be studying international relations, political science, economics, or another relevant field (preferred for many positions).

- Demonstrate strong research, writing, communication, administrative, and computer skills.

- Have previous office or relevant professional experience.

- Be available to commit 14–18 hours per week during the internship period.

- Have legal authorization to work in the United States. International students may apply if they possess valid U.S. work authorization (such as CPT or OPT). CFR does not sponsor work visas.
