Join High Seas Youth Ambassadors Program – Apply now

The future of life on Earth and the well-being of our planet are deeply interconnected with the health of our oceans. As concerns grow about environmental degradation and human impacts on marine ecosystems, there is an urgent call for countries to protect at least 30% of the ocean by 2030 (known as 30x30). This initiative aims to conserve what remains of ocean biodiversity and restore ocean abundance.

Increasing protections for areas outside national borders—commonly referred to as the high seas—is essential for the success of these global efforts. The high seas account for 64% of the world's oceans, including some of the most ecologically crucial, yet most vulnerable and least protected regions on Earth. After two decades of negotiations, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) — also known as the High Seas Treaty — provides the first international, legally binding framework to safeguard high seas biodiversity. In order for the Treaty to become international law, it requires ratification by sixty countries. Engaging and empowering young people globally is critical to building the momentum needed to secure this Treaty’s ratification.

To help drive this effort, EarthEcho International and the High Seas Alliance have launched the High Seas Youth Ambassador program, offering a paid opportunity for six youth ocean advocates (ages 17-22) in key regions around the world. These Ambassadors will design and lead innovative campaigns to generate public and political support for the Treaty’s ratification.

Applications for the 2025 High Seas Youth Ambassador program are open until December 9, 2024.
