Applications are officially open for the 2027/2028 intake of the Deutsche Welle International Journalism Traineeship. This prestigious 18-month paid training program offers aspiring journalists the chance to develop their skills with one of the world’s leading international broadcasters. DW is seeking innovative, curious individuals who are eager to engage with high-quality journalism, explore new forms of storytelling, and contribute to shaping the future of media.

Recognized as one of the most respected journalism programs in Germany and internationally, the traineeship combines practical newsroom experience with academic learning. Participants will gain hands-on exposure to areas such as television presenting, multimedia reporting, data-driven journalism, and the use of artificial intelligence in media. The program includes seminars and workshops conducted in both English and German at DW’s headquarters in Bonn and Berlin, as well as in its regional offices around the world.

Throughout the course, trainees spend six months attending theory-based and practice-oriented sessions, followed by nine months of rotational placements within DW’s editorial teams in Germany and abroad. An additional month is set aside for an elective internship, giving participants the freedom to explore a specialized area of interest.

To qualify, applicants should be native speakers of one of DW’s broadcasting languages with strong English and good German skills; native English speakers with good German proficiency; or native German speakers with excellent English. A completed university or college degree, or a professional qualification, is required—particularly those with backgrounds in technology, science, politics, economics, or law. However, DW also encourages individuals from diverse professions to apply, whether they are IT experts, lawyers, medical practitioners, mathematicians, chefs, athletes, or others who bring unique perspectives. Previous experience in journalism, creative thinking, familiarity with social media, teamwork skills, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are essential attributes.

Participants benefit from comprehensive journalistic training delivered by experienced professionals through interactive workshops and real newsroom engagement. The program offers deep insights into DW’s editorial operations across its German offices and international bureaus in cities such as Washington, Brussels, Riga, Delhi, and Jakarta. Trainees are guided through every stage of content production for TV, radio, and digital platforms—from idea generation to technical realization.

In addition to intensive training, the program provides a competitive, performance-based salary and the opportunity to secure a long-term position with Deutsche Welle upon completion. Trainees enjoy a dynamic and inclusive work culture that promotes innovation, collaboration, and diversity. DW also supports flexible work schedules, personal development opportunities, and a strong commitment to sustainability and employee well-being. Other perks include high-quality on-site dining, discounted public transportation, modern workspaces, and a wide variety of sports and wellness programs.
