PAID FELLOWSHIP: Apply for their Code for Africa AI Ethics Fellowship 2025 for young professionals in digital governance, policy and ethics
Code for Africa are thrilled to announce that applications for the 2025 Code for Africa (CfA) AI Ethics Fellowship are now being accepted. In collaboration with the Digitalise Youth consortium, Code for Africa invites mid-career professionals with experience in digital governance, policy, and rights to participate in this transformative opportunity. The fellowship is designed for individuals eager to influence Africa’s AI landscape while ensuring that individual protections remain at the forefront.
Selected fellows will work on developing comprehensive research and policy recommendations that promote the ethical integration of AI in both governance and civic technology. This process involves examining regional frameworks such as the AU Cyber Security Convention and ECOWAS data regulations alongside international standards like GDPR and the OECD AI Principles. The goal is to devise innovative strategies that address bias and support the creation of inclusive AI policies.
Participants in this fellowship will receive invaluable support through CfA’s TechLab, DataLab, and AI Sandbox, complemented by guidance from policy advisors within the Digitalise Youth consortium and access to global ethical AI networks. This collaborative environment brings together experts from digital rights organizations, think tanks, and democratic governance, providing fellows with robust resources ranging from technical advice to platforms for policy advocacy.
We are seeking policy experts and ethicists who possess a strong background in developing regulatory frameworks, drafting legal guidelines, or creating advisory reports. Candidates should be well-versed in global standards such as GDPR, OECD AI Principles, or UNESCO’s recommendations on AI ethics, and have a sound understanding of data protection and human rights considerations. Experience in conducting fairness assessments or ethical risk audits, the ability to translate ethical guidelines into actionable technical specifications, and a proven record of influencing policy or corporate practices are essential. Moreover, applicants should demonstrate cultural sensitivity, particularly regarding the socio-cultural impacts of AI on marginalized groups, and have prior experience working with African civil society or multilateral institutions. Fluency in English, French, or Arabic is required, with multilingual candidates preferred. Eligible applicants must be residents of Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Guinea, Benin, Togo, Cameroon, South Sudan, Ethiopia, or Somalia, and show a deep commitment to advancing African communities.
