REMOTE TRAINING: Apply for the JournalismAI Academy for young journalists and storytellers
Applications are open for the JournalismAI Academy, a no-cost, virtual training program designed to equip journalists and media professionals with insights into the transformative power of artificial intelligence. Developed by the JournalismAI initiative at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and supported by the Google News Initiative, this immersive programme has trained more than 180 newsroom professionals worldwide since its launch in 2021.
This year, the Academy is offering a second edition exclusively for journalists across Sub-Saharan Africa, selecting 20 participants from diverse regions including Central, East, Southern, and West Africa. The program is scheduled to begin in July 2025 and offers participants an enriching opportunity to delve into how AI technologies can advance the practice of journalism. The Academy welcomes applicants from any news organisation, provided they are based within Sub-Saharan Africa and fluent in English.
Participants will experience a blend of expert-led sessions and collaborative discussions designed to foster understanding of AI’s potential in journalism. Throughout the five-week journey, they will also be guided in creating tools and strategies to facilitate the integration of AI solutions into their newsrooms. No prior technical knowledge or coding expertise is necessary to take part—only a reliable internet connection to engage in live sessions.
Ideal candidates are those who already possess a foundational understanding of artificial intelligence and work within news organisations actively exploring the integration of such technologies. Priority will be given to those who can influence the adoption of AI tools and practices to address challenges facing the media industry. Freelancers and journalists not affiliated with a newsroom, or those residing outside Sub-Saharan Africa, are not eligible to participate.
At the conclusion of the Academy, participants will emerge with an actionable framework for adopting AI in their organisations, a deeper understanding of its capabilities and limitations, and a network of peers from across the continent. This programme is a stepping stone towards empowering journalists with the knowledge and tools needed to harness artificial intelligence for impactful storytelling and innovation in the media landscape.
The application deadline is June 15, 2025, at 11:59 PM GMT. Interested journalists are encouraged to apply promptly to secure a spot in this transformative training opportunity.
