UNESCO INTERNSHIPS: Apply to join UNESCO’s Ocean Literacy Internship Program in Venice

UNESCO is offering a unique internship opportunity for two individuals to support the Project Office of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) within its Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, based in Venice, Italy. The internship focuses on ocean literacy initiatives and runs for approximately six months, from February 2025 to July 2025.

Selected candidates will work under the supervision of a Senior Programme Officer and contribute to various activities aligned with UNESCO’s mission. These include supporting outdoor educational projects like the “Kindergarten of the Lagoon,” assisting with local initiatives such as the Ocean Literacy Center in San Servolo, and helping organize “Gite Biodiverse” activities in collaboration with the National Research Council (CNR). Interns will also aid in developing training courses and educational materials for projects like SEA BEYOND and Save the Wave, while maintaining contact with research institutions, NGOs, universities, and other organizations involved in ocean literacy efforts.

Additionally, interns will be involved in planning events for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and the Third UN Ocean Conference. Responsibilities extend to supporting social media communications, managing mailing lists, and collaborating on various administrative tasks.

This internship offers valuable learning opportunities, including gaining a deeper understanding of UNESCO’s regional and global initiatives, hands-on experience in an international setting, and practical exposure to environmental education and science communication. Interns will also benefit from interacting with diverse audiences, ranging from young children to local communities.

To qualify, applicants should be enrolled in or recently graduated from a master’s or equivalent program in fields like education, ocean science, science communication, or development studies. Proficiency in English is essential, with knowledge of Italian or other UN languages considered an advantage. A background or interest in environmental education and science communication is preferred.

While the internship is unpaid, participants are responsible for covering their own travel, visa, and comprehensive health insurance expenses. UNESCO provides limited insurance coverage during the internship period, but candidates must provide proof of medical fitness and other supporting documents, such as an ID, enrollment certificate, or diploma, before starting.

Applicants must note that participation is not guaranteed, as UNESCO receives numerous applications from highly qualified candidates. If selected, candidates will be contacted directly within six months of applying.

Take this opportunity to contribute to UNESCO’s mission, gain international experience, and advance your career in ocean literacy and environmental education.
