Applications are now being accepted for the AIJC African Investigative Journalist of the Year Award 2023. African journalists are encouraged to submit their entries for the inaugural AIJC African Investigative Journalist of the Year Award.
Supported by Absa, this award acknowledges exceptional instances of investigative reporting within Africa that bring to light untold narratives, hold influential figures accountable, question those in the public eye, and serve the greater public interest. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place at the African Investigative Journalism Conference in Johannesburg from November 20 to 22, 2023.
Prize:
• The award prize is $5,000.
Eligibility:
• The opportunity is available to all journalists or journalist teams working across any media platform.
• Entries should pertain to stories from Africa or about Africa, published or broadcast in African media between June 1, 2022, and June 1, 2023.
• An individual journalist or organization may not submit more than two entries. Each entry can comprise a maximum of five stories.
Selection Criteria:
An esteemed panel of judges will determine the winners. They have the discretion to establish and utilize criteria they consider suitable and fair. Their assessment will consider:
• The uniqueness of the story and the revelations it brings to light.
• The investigative effort invested in the story, especially the level of innovation, determination, and bravery.
• The impact the story has had, particularly in terms of its contribution to public service.
