VOLUNTEERING : Join the World Climate Research Programme’s Earth System Modelling and Observations (ESMO) Scientific Steering Group – Apply now

Applications researchers and scientists are open to join the World Climate Research Programme’s Earth System Modelling and Observations (ESMO) - Core Project s Scientific Steering Group (SSG).

This international opportunity offers experts the chance to contribute to the future direction of climate modelling, observations, and Earth system science through one of the leading global climate research initiatives.

ESMO is particularly seeking candidates with expertise in kilometre-scale modelling and data-driven approaches to Earth system science. However, applications are welcomed from professionals across the wider Earth system science community.

About ESMO

The Earth System Modelling and Observations (ESMO) Core Project serves as a key component of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). The initiative coordinates and advances global efforts in climate modelling, observations, and data assimilation while fostering collaboration across international scientific networks.

Through partnerships with other WCRP projects and external organizations, ESMO works to strengthen understanding of climate processes and improve the ability to monitor, predict, and project changes in the Earth system across different spatial and temporal scales.

The project focuses on three major scientific priorities:

  • Advancing Earth system predictions and projections from weeks to centuries through integrated model-observation frameworks.
  • Improving climate monitoring, understanding, attribution, and uncertainty assessment using observational and modelling approaches.
  • Harnessing emerging technologies to enhance modelling, observations, and climate research capabilities.

Role of the Scientific Steering Group

The Scientific Steering Group is responsible for guiding and overseeing the implementation of ESMO’s scientific strategy. Working closely with project leadership and the International Project Office, members help shape research priorities, coordinate international collaborations, and support the development of new scientific initiatives.

The Steering Group consists of 14 members appointed for an initial four-year term, with opportunities for renewal based on WCRP membership guidelines.

Responsibilities

Selected members will contribute to the strategic development of ESMO by:

  • Providing scientific expertise and leadership for project activities.
  • Supporting the design and implementation of ESMO’s science plan.
  • Coordinating and strengthening working groups and collaborative initiatives.
  • Identifying new interdisciplinary themes and research priorities.
  • Facilitating partnerships with other WCRP projects and external stakeholders.
  • Contributing to workshops, publications, scientific reports, and policy-relevant outputs.
  • Promoting dialogue between climate modelling, observational science, and emerging technologies.

Time Commitment

Scientific Steering Group members are expected to:

  • Attend online meetings approximately every three to four months.
  • Participate in occasional virtual consultations and collaborative activities.
  • Contribute to workshops, working groups, and scientific discussions throughout the year.
  • Engage with broader WCRP and international climate science initiatives when appropriate.

One in-person meeting is anticipated every two years, subject to available opportunities and resources.

Application Requirements

Interested candidates are required to submit:

  • A completed application form
  • A one-page curriculum vitae outlining qualifications and experience
  • A motivation statement of up to 250 words describing their interest in joining the Steering Group

Applications that do not meet these requirements may not be considered.

Researchers interested in contributing to global climate research, advancing Earth system modelling, and supporting international scientific cooperation are encouraged to apply for this leadership opportunity within the World Climate Research Programme.

Don't miss out on the application deadline which is 15 July 2026 at 23:59 CEST.
