Contest for the 12th Climate Star Awards 2026
Applications are open for the 12th Climate Star Awards, an opportunity recognising outstanding and creative local climate action by Climate Alliance members across Europe.
The awards celebrate projects that demonstrate meaningful climate impact, engage communities and provide inspiring examples of how local governments and communities can respond to the climate crisis.
About the Climate Star Awards
The Climate Star is organised by Climate Alliance Lower Austria and Climate Alliance Europe and has been recognising successful local climate initiatives approximately every two years since 2002.
For the 12th edition, Climate Alliance members and networks of municipalities can submit projects for consideration, while eligible municipal projects can also be nominated by others.
A total of 16 Climate Stars will be awarded at a gala ceremony in Lower Austria in April 2027.
What Projects Are Eligible?
The Climate Star is looking for local climate projects that demonstrate:
- Long-term and meaningful impact
- Strong community and citizen engagement
- Creative approaches to climate action
- Potential to inspire other communities
- Positive media resonance
- Innovative local solutions to climate challenges
Projects can be submitted directly by eligible Climate Alliance members or nominated by others.
Application Timeline
- Applications open: 24 August 2026
- Application deadline: 31 October 2026
- Jury assessment: December 2026 – January 2027
- Winners announced: Early 2027
- Awards ceremony: 29 April 2027

Additional Information
- Selected projects will receive recognition at the European level and gain an opportunity to showcase their work as examples of successful local climate action.
- All applicants will also be considered for inclusion in the Climate Alliance Climate Library, helping preserve and share their work with a wider audience.
- The 16 winning projects will be publicly recognised during a special gala at Luberegg Castle in Lower Austria on 29 April 2027.
