FULLY FUNDED TO ITALY WITH STIPENDS: Apply for the European University Institute Policy leader fellowship 2025
Applications are now open for the 2025/2026 Policy Leader Fellowship (PLF) at the European University Institute’s Florence School of Transnational Governance (STG). This residential programme is designed for mid-career professionals from various policy fields, including politics, civil service, media, and non-governmental organizations. Unlike many similar initiatives, the fellowship prioritizes practical, hands-on experience in policy-making over academic qualifications, making it ideal for professionals with diverse career trajectories.
Participants in the fellowship spend five or ten months in Florence working on policy recommendations and solutions to transnational challenges, drawing inspiration from their professional expertise. They also benefit from access to the STG’s academic community and resources, gaining opportunities for professional development through skills training and active participation in the Institute’s events. Additionally, fellows enrich the STG by sharing their real-world knowledge in teaching, networking, and collaborative activities.
The fellowship offers two durations: five months (either September 2025 to January 2026 or February 2026 to June 2026) or ten months (September 2025 to June 2026). During this period, fellows are required to reside in Florence to ensure full participation in the programme’s activities. Short trips outside Florence or Italy are allowed, but the fellowship cannot be completed remotely.
This programme targets mid-career professionals with at least ten years of professional experience in relevant policy areas. Applicants are expected to demonstrate a strong track record of accomplishments, the ability to work independently on their proposed fellowship projects, and openness to engaging with ideas beyond their area of expertise. The fellowship is particularly interested in individuals who show the potential for significant contributions to their policy fields in the future.
Applications are evaluated based on several factors. Candidates must present a clear and compelling work plan with a strong focus on transnational policy impact. Their motivation for joining the programme, including how the fellowship will advance their career and how they can contribute to the STG community, is also critical. Professional excellence, as demonstrated through past achievements, is a key criterion, along with alignment to the STG’s research priorities. The programme values diversity, aiming to include fellows from varied thematic, geographic, and gender backgrounds.
Successful candidates receive a monthly stipend of €2,500. If they earn additional income during the fellowship, the grant may be adjusted to a minimum of €1,750, depending on the disclosed amount. Travel expenses for incoming and outgoing trips to Florence are reimbursed up to €1,200, covering economy airfare or first-class rail tickets. Fellows with dependents may also qualify for additional allowances, such as up to €300 per month for a partner living in Florence (if their income is below €2,000) and €200 per month for each dependent child. These family benefits are contingent on proper documentation and the absence of similar allowances from other sources.
This fellowship is an exceptional opportunity for mid-career policy professionals to refine their expertise, develop impactful solutions to global challenges, and expand their professional networks. Interested individuals can find more information and submit their applications through the EUI’s official platform.
