Successful applicants will pursue one of the Hertie School’s postgraduate degrees—the Master of Public Policy, Master of International Affairs, or Master of Data Science for Public Policy. The scholarship covers €38,500 in tuition fees and includes a monthly stipend of €1,000 to support living expenses throughout the duration of the programme. In addition to financial assistance, scholars benefit from mentorship and leadership training through the SOS-Kinderdörfer weltweit network, designed to nurture their potential as future leaders in policy, governance, and social innovation.

This initiative targets talented young individuals from African nations who face financial or structural barriers to accessing similar educational opportunities. Eligible applicants must hold citizenship from one of the following countries: Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Somaliland, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, or Zambia. Candidates should demonstrate a proven record of community involvement, a clear dedication to driving positive change, and qualities such as resilience, empathy, and collaboration.

To be considered, applicants must first apply for admission to one of the Hertie School’s master’s programmes by 1 May. Once an offer of admission is received, candidates will gain access to the Funding Application Portal, where they can apply for available scholarships within two weeks. The scholarship application requires a concise essay describing an initiative or contribution that has benefited their community, how it represents their personal values and leadership potential, and how receiving this award would amplify their future impact.

Shortlisted individuals will proceed to an interview stage conducted by representatives from both the Hertie School and SOS-Kinderdörfer weltweit. This final step ensures that the most dedicated, visionary, and community-driven applicants are selected for this transformative programme.
