Applications are invited for the SBW Berlin Scholarship for Refugees, a programme supporting talented young refugees and other eligible foreigners in Germany who want to pursue higher education while contributing to social projects. The scholarship is designed for individuals who want to use the knowledge and skills gained through their studies to support their communities and continue social or charitable work after completing their education.

As part of the programme, scholarship recipients are expected to develop and participate in a social project during their studies in Berlin. Projects may involve supporting refugees or other community groups and can be carried out in cooperation with nonprofit or social organizations. In some cases, SBW Berlin may define the social project. After completing their studies, recipients are expected to continue developing their project or engage in charitable work in Germany for at least 18 months, with SBW Berlin continuing to provide advisory support.

The programme is open to eligible foreigners living in Germany, including recognized refugees, homeless foreigners, certain holders of residence permits under the German Residence Act, and holders of a settlement permit in Germany. Applicants must generally be between 18 and 30 years old and demonstrate relatively low net income according to the programme’s guidelines.

Candidates should have professional or voluntary experience in the nonprofit or social sector gained after beginning their stay in Germany. A recommendation letter from a social institution or nonprofit organization is desirable. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate good academic performance, with an average equivalent to at least a German grade of 2.5, as well as a clear motivation to become socially involved and develop social projects.

Applicants must either be living in Germany or be able to demonstrate that they have not resided in Germany for more than six years before applying. They must also have a university entrance qualification where applicable and either apply before beginning their studies or already be enrolled in the first, second or, at most, third semester at a state-recognized university in Germany or abroad. Those applying for a master’s degree may also apply shortly before or after completing their bachelor’s degree.

Applicants who intend to study in Berlin or Potsdam must separately apply for admission to a university or university of applied sciences. Admission to a university is not part of the scholarship application, meaning candidates are responsible for securing their own university place.

During the scholarship period, recipients are expected to dedicate approximately 2–8 hours per week to their social projects, maintain good academic performance, participate actively in regular SBW Berlin project meetings and workshops, prepare project reports and give presentations about their work. They are also expected to communicate openly about their academic and professional goals and proactively contribute to the development of their projects.

In addition, scholarship recipients should be prepared to continue their social engagement after their studies. If a recipient discontinues their studies or project under circumstances requiring repayment, a repayment plan may begin three months after the end of the study or funding period, with repayment made in 12 monthly installments.
