Fully Sponsored : Apply for the SCAR Visiting Scholar Scheme 2026

Applications are open for the 2026 SCAR Visiting Scholar Scheme, an opportunity for experienced scientists and academics working in Antarctic research to undertake short-term international visits focused on training, mentoring, and research capacity building.

The scheme is particularly aimed at strengthening Antarctic research programmes in countries with smaller or less-developed capacities. Successful scholars can spend between one and four weeks at one or more research institutes in a SCAR member country, either providing expertise and mentorship or receiving training and knowledge from another programme.

About the SCAR Visiting Scholar Scheme

The Visiting Scholar Scheme, previously known as the Visiting Professor Scheme, was established by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) in 2013.

It supports scientists and academics whose work contributes to SCAR's research objectives and who are more than five years beyond completing their PhD. The programme is designed to encourage the exchange of knowledge, strengthen institutional capacity, and create lasting research partnerships between Antarctic research programmes.

Visits can take place to or from smaller and developing Antarctic research programmes, allowing applicants to propose projects that either provide expertise to a developing programme or enable researchers from such programmes to gain new skills and experience.

Programme Objectives

The SCAR Visiting Scholar Scheme seeks to:

  • Build Antarctic research capacity in countries with smaller or developing programmes
  • Facilitate the transfer of scientific knowledge and technical skills
  • Encourage training and mentoring between researchers
  • Strengthen connections between Antarctic research institutions
  • Develop long-term international research partnerships
  • Support advances in Antarctic research through collaboration

Since the scheme began in 2013, 26 SCAR Visiting Scholarships have been awarded, supporting researchers and institutions involved in Antarctic research.

Applications must be submitted by the deadline 18 September 2026 to be considered for the 2026 SCAR Visiting Scholar Scheme.
