Application Process

Prospective YPP candidates are expected to first confirm their eligibility and then review the relevant YPP job opening through the UN recruitment system.

Applications are submitted through Inspira, the UN's recruitment platform, during the designated application period.

Applicants should carefully complete their application and provide accurate information relating to nationality, education, work experience and language proficiency.

Relevant academic documentation and government-issued identification showing nationality may also be required.

How Candidates Are Evaluated

Applications are initially screened against the basic eligibility requirements, including nationality, age, education and language proficiency.

Where the number of eligible applicants from the same country and examination area is particularly high, additional screening may be undertaken. This can take into account factors such as:

• Highest level of education completed
• Knowledge of UN official languages
• Relevant professional experience

Work experience is not itself a basic eligibility requirement, although relevant experience may contribute to the screening process where additional ranking is necessary.

YPP Examination Process

Candidates who are invited to the examination typically progress through several stages.

Online Examination

The written examination may consist of two stages.

The first stage generally includes general and specialised multiple-choice questions.

Candidates who successfully complete the first stage may proceed to a second stage involving specialised constructed-response questions.

Interview

Candidates who successfully complete the written examination may be invited to a competency-based interview conducted by video conference.

The assessment considers competencies and abilities relevant to working in an international organisation, alongside knowledge related to the specific examination area.

What Happens After the Examination?

Candidates who successfully complete the YPP examination process are placed on a roster used to fill appropriate vacancies within the UN Secretariat.

Roster placement can remain valid for up to three years, during which candidates may be considered for relevant vacancies.

However, placement on the roster does not guarantee an employment offer.

Candidates selected from the roster may receive a two-year fixed-term contract at the beginning of their professional UN career. Subject to satisfactory performance and applicable conditions, they may subsequently be considered for a continuing contract.

Career Placement

YPP placements may be at either the P-1 or P-2 level, depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Potential UN duty stations include locations such as:

• Nairobi
• New York
• Santiago
• Vienna

Successful candidates must be prepared to serve at a UN duty station or field operation as required.
