Applications are now open for young island leaders interested in participating virtually in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP31), which will take place in Türkiye from 9 to 20 November 2026. The Island Youth Network is inviting eight young people from island communities to join its Accredited Virtual Delegation and gain a closer understanding of how international climate negotiations are conducted.

The opportunity is designed to give young islanders a chance to follow global climate discussions directly, even without travelling to the conference. Selected participants will receive virtual access to COP31 negotiations and will have the opportunity to observe international climate diplomacy in practice. They will also be encouraged to share reflections, perspectives and insights from the negotiations, helping bring greater visibility to the experiences and priorities of island communities in global climate discussions.

Applicants do not need previous experience in climate negotiations or international diplomacy. The opportunity is open to young people who are curious about the processes shaping global climate policy and who have an interest in issues affecting islands, oceans, climate change or international affairs.

Through the virtual delegation, participants will gain exposure to international decision-making processes while developing a better understanding of the issues being discussed at COP31. Accreditation and access to the negotiations are being supported by SMILO – Small Islands Organisation, a partner organisation of the initiative.

Applications must be submitted by 13 October 2026. Eight Young Island Leaders will be selected to participate in the virtual delegation.
