Public research university George Mason University is located in Fairfax County, Virginia, not far from Washington, D.C. Initially established as a regional affiliate of the University of Virginia serving Northern Virginia, the university was created in 1949. It was renamed in 1959 in honour of George Mason, one of the American Founding Fathers, and became an independent university in 1972. Since then, the institution has expanded to become the Commonwealth of Virginia's largest public university.
In Virginia, the institution has four campuses: Fairfax, Arlington, Front Royal, and Prince William Counties. Additionally, it runs an international campus in Incheon, South Korea, as well as a retreat and conference centre in Lorton. The main campus of the institution is located in Fairfax, Virginia.
"R1: Doctoral Universities - Very high research activity" is the category in which the university is listed. At George Mason University, two professors—James M. Buchanan in 1986 and Vernon L. Smith in 2002—were honoured with the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics.
On the Fairfax campus lies EagleBank Arena, an arena and performance venue with 10,000 seats that is run by the university.
EagleBank Arena in Fairfax is one of the four campuses of George Mason University in the United States. The institution also maintains campuses in Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, and South Korea. Graduate students in a variety of fields are eligible to apply for the Adam Smith Fellowship, which is a program jointly funded by the Mercatus Centre and Liberty Fund, Inc.
About the Fellowship
The Adam Smith Fellowship is a co-sponsored program of the Mercatus Center and Liberty Fund, Inc. Adam Smith Fellowships are awarded to graduate students attending PhD programs at any university and in any discipline, including but not limited to economics, philosophy, political science, and sociology.
